LA PALMA STYLE NATIVITY

The style of this Nativity—bold colors, simple designs, and glossy surfaces—was popularized by Fernando Llort. Llort has been called “El Salvador’s national artist.” He studied art in France and theology in Belgium, and his work shows influences from Salvadoran folk traditions and Mayan culture. In the 1970s, he moved to the mountain village of La Palma, El Salvador, where he founded a workshop called La Semilla de Dios (The Seed of God). Today La Semilla de Dios continues to operate as a cooperative where local artisans create wood items in the distinctive Llort style.
