CARTONERÍA NATIVITY

San Ángel, Mexico City, Mexico
Papier-mache
1990

This cartonería (papier-mache) Nativity was made in San Ángel, a neighborhood of Mexico City. The set includes the Holy Family and the wise men. The delicate faces of the figures and the elaborate drapery of their garments indicate a high level of skill on the part of the artist. The making of papier-mache sculptures is a traditional craft with a long history in Mexico. It was originally introduced during the Spanish Colonial period for the purpose of making artwork for churches. Cartonería figures are made throughout the year for a wide variety of religious festivals, including Day of the Dead, Holy Week, and Christmas. Mexico City is a major center of production. Today, fewer members of the younger generation in Mexico are learning this craft, but certain cultural organizations are working to preserve the tradition.
