7. ANNUNCIATION TO THE SHEPHERDS panel

This stained-glass panel from the Christmas window in Glencairn’s Chapel illustrates the biblical story of the Annunciation to the Shepherds (Luke 2:8–14). Here a winged angel with a red robe and green halo descends from above, announcing to the shepherds that they will “find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”

The panel is a copy of one in the church of Sainte-Radegonde outside the city of Poitiers, France. Winfred S. Hyatt (1891–1959), who designed most of the neo-medieval windows at Bryn Athyn Cathedral and Glencairn, referred to Glencairn’s Christmas window as the “medieval window.” It was made from 1928 to 1956.
