School Programs

Glencairn Museum has an active education department. These full-time and part-time museum educators are supported by a talented group of interns from Bryn Athyn College. We offer our school programs from September to May. The best times are between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Space is available on site for eating lunch. Many groups combine a visit to Glencairn with a tour of Bryn Athyn Cathedral (just across the street, open weekdays except Monday, 215-947-0266). The three programs described below can be experienced individually, or the Stained Glass Program can be combined with either the Highlights Tour or the Castle Tour. School programs must be arranged in advance by calling the Education Office at 267-502-2995, or by sending e-mail to Diane Fehon, Education Coordinator, at diane.fehon@glencairnmuseum.org.

Student Highlights Tour
$4 per student, adult chaperones free, extra adults $4 each
45 minutes
One adult chaperone required for every 8 students
Recommended for grades 5 and above

In the Highlights Tour, religious life through the ages is presented by means of a remarkable collection that illustrates religions as varied as ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman, Medieval Christian, Islamic, Asian, American Indian, and the New Church. Visitors also appreciate the religious symbolism that decorates the building itself, built in the 1920s and 30s by Raymond Pitcairn. Pitcairn used European and American craftsmen who were highly skilled in the creation of stained glass, sculpture, mosaic, woodcarving and metalwork. The Highlights Tour is flexible, allowing teachers to adapt the Museum experience to support classroom work.

Castle Tour
$4 per student, adult chaperones free, extra adults $4 each
45 minutes
One adult chaperone required for every 8 students
Recommended for grades 5 and below

This interactive school program teaches students about the importance of religion and morality in the life of a medieval castle. The students travel back in time to meet castle characters such as a king, queen, knight, peasant, or monk, who teach them about medieval feasting, castle defense, art, and weapons. Recommended for grades 5 and below.

The Stained Glass Program
$4 per student, adult chaperones free, extra adults $4 each
45 minutes
Up to 24 students, one adult chaperone required for every 8 students
Recommended for all grades

The Stained Glass Program explores the symbolism inherent in medieval art by looking at the Museum's best twelfth century stained glass and twentieth century replicas from the famous Chartes Cathedral in France. How can you find angels in the windows? What kind of people have halos? What are the clues for finding King David or St. Peter? What kind of people wear pointed hats? These questions and more are answered in this interactive program.

College Courses and Internships

Glencairn Museum enjoys a close relationship with Bryn Athyn College of the New Church. For this reason the Museum sponsors a number of college courses that are held at Glencairn in the midst of the collections. In addition, students at Bryn Athyn College with a strong interest in religion, history, art history, teaching, or museum careers may apply for positions in the Museum Internship Program.

Museum Internship Program
Internships are available exclusively to students in Bryn Athyn College's History Major and Cooperative Education Program. The purpose of the Museum Internship Program is to develop job-related skills and clarify career goals. Students receive three college credits for their 200 hours of work, and in most cases are compensated for their efforts. Museum Education Internships are a vital part of the Museum's education department, where the interns help run programs for the general public and students of all ages. Other internships can be arranged when Museum needs and student interests coincide; internships are possible in research, publications, collections management, exhibitry, and other museum-related fields. For more information please contact Ed Gyllenhaal, Internship Coordinator, at 267-502-2983 or by e-mail at ed.gyllenhaal@glencairnmuseum.org.
